For the transportation of Class 2 and Class 3 specific pathogens under the Infectious Diseases Control Law, additional distribution expenses (borne by the applicant) will apply due to legal restrictions on transportation methods. If bacterial strains requiring P3 facility handling are included, a P3 facility usage fee will also be incurred. For more information, please contact GCMR.
Cultures are usually shipped within 2 weeks after receiving the distribution request. Depending on the growth condition, it may take more time.
Bacterial strains will only be distributed to individuals who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to handle them and who are affiliated with an institution equipped with an appropriate physical containment facility corresponding to the required biosafety level.
If any aspects of the applicant’s qualifications or facility specifications are unclear, we may request additional documentation for verification. Please note that we reserve the right to decline distribution if insufficient information is provided.
Distribution of DNA samples: Our resource center also distributes DNA samples. They can be provided to facilities that do not handle live pathogens.
The reference strains isolated and recorded at GCMR can be distributed without restriction to institutions that meet the biosafety handling requirements for the corresponding risk level. However, redistribution of bacterial strains purchased from other domestic or international culture collections is not permitted. Therefore, this restriction applies to all bacterial strains acquired by GCMR from domestic or international collections, such as ATCC and JCM, since 1992. However, bacterial strains owned by GCMR can be used as MTA-COPE strains (joint-use strains) in joint research with GCMR. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
For bacterial strains isolated at GCMR (Gifu University), please use the GTC or JNBP number. For bacterial strains distributed by RIMD (The University of Osaka), please use the RIMD or JNBP number. In cases where bacterial strains isolated at GCMR have been deposited at JCM or ATCC and possess institutional numbers from both institutions, kindly use the GTC number.
We provide access to a large number of reference and isolated strains covering a wide range of bacterial species. To search for bacterial strains, please visit the NBRP website.
In recent years, various restrictions have been imposed on the distribution of bacterial strains based on the Convention on Biological Diversity. For bacterial strains obtained from international sources, GTC complies with the convention through the exchange of material transfer agreements (MTAs). For this reason, we do not, in principle, redistribute bacterial strains purchased from other strain-distributing institutions after 1992. However, their joint use is available, including the use of bacterial strains in GCMR within the scope of joint research with GCMR and the use of DNA samples. Therefore, if you are interested in using bacterial strains labeled “MTA:COPE,” please contact GCMR.
